greetings and an intro!
Hello, listmembers;
I subscribed to the list this week, and have been reading the posts with
interest. I had joined with hopes to regain some of the killifish knowledge that
I had - once upon a time. In the 70's hubby and I were active in the Killifish
world; and enjoying our small, colorful, and entertaining friends, as well as
other assorted devoted human keepers. We participated in a few shows; our
local group hosted the AKA show in Portland one year. That was a real treat!
What a wonderful collection of people and fishes we had. (I believe it was
called the PNKA, Pacific Northwest Killifish Assoc.)
I wish to rejoin the Killi world, and thought that this might be a great way
to do so: ease into the group, watch, listen, read, and learn! I was also of the
mind that I should probably start out with what I remember as being the more
easily raised and kept Killies; and see what happens from there. It has been
very interesting snorkeling around the web locating Killifish pages: it brings
back some fond memories - and an itch to aquire some fish for myself.
I was trying to recall just which 'safe place' I have stored my numerous
transparancies. We had a wonderful photography tank for capturing the fish
in all their splendidly colorful glory, and I am fervently hoping that I ID-ed the
fish. I don't remember what exactly we had, although we had approximately
50 tanks I should remember some! I do recall that one of my favorites was
the Aphyosemion Gardneri Misaje (and I see that they are no longer in that
group); but we I do remember that we had the Nigripinnis (sp?) amongst
others, several of which were the more challenging peat spawners. Hubby
(Mike) was a far more serious keeper than I; while I prefered to enjoy the
relative ease and colorful beauty of the Aphyosemian (sp??).
So, after I've rambled on terribly, I should say that I had just wanted to
introduce myself, and hope that in the weeks to come that I might glean
some information from those of you on the list, and perhaps some of you
could help me decide where to re-start, and how I might find some adults
that could make a trip to Oregon in the spring time! I have an established *35
gallon tank that I would like to aquascape in the next few months and add
one type of Killi to it. I'd like it to be a community tank, of sorts, yet do not
want to cross-breed any of the types. If there is any advice there, please do
speak up, I am welcoming any and all help here!
*We have two 1-2 year old, 8" & 6" Oscars in there right now, and they
will be moving to a larger tank as soon as we either have it built, or find one
that suits our desires and needs. I would greatly appreciate any ideas, help,
information, and/or links to filtration, brands of tanks, etc, too, if anyone can
offer anything. We figure we will need about 100 gallons, and a considerably
better filtration system than we've ever had before, but don't even know where
to begin there!
Thanks for reading so far, and thanks in advance for any ideas or help
anyone might be willing to offer
Kindest regards,
Sandra

Popcorn (pearl 'tiels); Tuxedo, Jessica, & Kippy (the Labradors); Tilly (the Cavalier);
Jimmie & Porky (the Oscars); Colin, Kyle, & Brit (the children), and Michael (the one
that finances the insanity, errr, the menagerie!)
