nothos

Hi all,

I've got a strain of N. patrizii, that gives out both red and yellow tailed
fish. I always assumed this was genetic, until my last yellow tail
(absolutely definately yellow for 5-6 months) turned red tailed. It started
with a very red base (at first I thought he was ill) and worked its way
back. If its genetic , it should be fixed for an individual (shouldn't it?)

Whats going on? Is it merely a food thing? What other factors are there?

Now Mozambique is flooded, (and presumably nothos are everywhere, all mixed
up with no collection codes!) is it fair to say that all the moz99 nothos
are now extinct? (now all are aquarium strain ! :) )- e.g. rachovi moz99/2
is now crossed with 99/9. These are the worst floods for 30 years
(apparently) so assuming that this kind of thing happens say, twice a
century on a big scale but probably a lot more on a small scale- how comes
there is so much variation within a strain. Or more to the point - why don't
you get the odd
99/2 type amongst the 99/9s (or do you?). I am using the 99/2s and 99/9s as
an example - I'm assuming that they are not too far apart. If it is just
down to mate choice we would expect more than one strain of rachovi at 1
location.

anyone know the answers?

                thanks

                                                                Jules
