smell VE cultures

At school we keep 2   1qt jars of culture.  they have lids set loosly on top.  they
are kept in the dark but last year were on  a window ledge.  We did experivent last
year and found our most productive ratrio was 5:1  with cider vinegar being the 1.
we also put a little chopped apple in the bottom.  ours do not smell enough that it
is noticable.    Maybe instead of apple some Beano should be added to the culture.
