If my memory serves me, a good growth of plants uses minerals present in the
water and it will become less calcium laden and thus softer. If you add a
little magnesium or other buffering salt, the water will remain nicely
buffered at close to 7.0 and not dive into the battery acid realm with some
fish excrement present.
