MORE CALLS NEEDED TO PROTECT SALMON!
THE FULL HOUSE COULD VOTE ON THE "ANTI-SALMON" HASTINGS RESOLUTION AT ANY
TIME. WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY TO DEFEAT THIS RESOLUTION.
In a very quick voice vote on July 21, the House Resources Committee
passed
the “Anti-Salmon” Hastings Resolution – H. CON. RES. 63. Debate wasvery
short, with only three representatives taking the floor – Representatives
Greg Walden (R-OR) and Barbara Cubin (R-WY) speaking in favor of the
resolution, and Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR) speaking against.
Because the vote took place much earlier than scheduled, many
representatives were not present.
The resolution now moves to the House floor. Unfortunately, there is no
indication of when that will happen. BUT IT COULD BE AS EARLY AS
TOMORROW,
SO WE NEED YOUR CALLS TODAY! CALL OR EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND URGE
HIM/HER NOT TO SUPPORT THE “ANTI-SALMON” RESOLUTION!

Background Information:
H. Con. Res. 63, introduced by Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA), signals the
Clinton
Administration to ignore dam removal as an option for recovering
threatened
and endangered salmon and steelhead runs on the Columbia and Snake
Rivers.
This position flies in the face of what the American people deserve:
rational, balanced consideration of all the options for restoring these
valuable fish runs. And the resolution sends the signal to President
Clinton and Vice President Gore that they should ignore the scientific
and
economic studies that point to dam removal as the best option for
endangered
Snake River salmon.
Largely because of four federal dams on the Lower Snake River, every
single
species of Snake River salmon is now listed under the Endangered Species
Act. This December, the National Marine Fisheries Service will release
its
long-term recovery plan for Snake River salmon, and partial removal of
these
four dams is one of the options being studied.
IF THIS IMPORTANT DECISION IS TO BE CREDIBLE AND RATIONAL, DAM REMOVAL
MUST
CONTINUE TO BE STUDIED AS A RECOVERY OPTION.
