Ask Congress to vote YES on the Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River
bill.

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Jim Greenwood (R-PA)
will
introduce in the 106th congress bills to protect portions of the lower
Delaware River in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, by including
them in the National Wild and Scenic River system.

You can help secure this designation by writing, calling, or emailing
your
Senator and Representative and asking them to support legislation that
would
designate the lower Delaware River a Wild and Scenic River.

The bills would add 65.6 miles of the lower Delaware River to the Wild
and
Scenic Rivers system. In 1978, Congress included two sections of the
Upper
Delaware in the National Wild and Scenic River System. Protecting
sections
of the lower Delaware is an important step for the overall health of the
historically remarkable Delaware River.



The lower Delaware River Wild and Scenic River management plan has local
support. The National Park Service, with input form a Management Plan
Committee, developed a management plan for the lower Delaware River. The
Committee includes local landowners, conservation groups, businesses, and
town planners. The communities along the portions of the river included
in
the bill voted to adopt the plan and support designation.


The Delaware River is the longest free-flowing river in the East. The
lower
Delaware River is eligible for inclusion in the nation’s Wild and Scenic
Rivers system based on its free-flowing condition, and because of its
outstandingly remarkable values in the areas of recreation, scenery,
culture, history, geology, water quality, and natural resources.


The Lower Delaware River has special historic importance. The role the
river
played in the shaping of American history is particularly unique. The
lower
Delaware is the site of George Washington’s famous Christmas Eve
crossing.
The river is also greatly valued for its recreational use, including blue
fish and striped bass fishing, canoeing, bicycling, and hiking.


Write or email your Senator and Representative a letter asking them to
support the lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River bill. The following
letter
is a sample-a personal touch is always most effective.

Portions of the Upper Delaware River have already been designated by
congress. Adding the lower Delaware to the Nation’s Wild and Scenic River
System is an important step towards ensuring the long-term health of the
entire Delaware River.

The Delaware River is important to the citizens of New Jersey in many
ways.
It provides drinking water, recreation, scenic beauty, and it is a site
of
great historical importance. Wild and Scenic River designation would
protect
the free-flowing character of the lower Delaware river and it’s many
outstandingly remarkable values.
