1) Second Notice: 2001 Youth in Action/Community Service Grant Available

2001 Youth in Action/Community Service Grant - Funded by the Metropolitan
Life Foundation. This National 4-H Council Youth Grants Program will
provide community service project grants of $500 to $1500 to youth that
take leadership roles and work with other youth and adults in their
communities. Grants require youth teams to identify critical issues in
their communities, develop activities to address these issues, and
educate other young people and adults on ways to model community service.
The application will be available on website at
www.fourhcouncil.edu/ycc/grantinfo.htm. Click on Apply Now.

2) EnviroScape® Introduces New Watershed Kit

The new Make Your Own Watershed Kit, by EnviroScape® Jr., is now
available. Individuals or small groups will have fun creating and
painting their own watershed model (and buildings) with this kit. And
they'll experiment with activities suggested by the kit's instructions
(in English and Spanish) that help them learn how to prevent water
pollution.
Modeled after the award-winning EnviroScape® models used
internationally by schools and communities, EnviroScape® 's Make Your Own
Watershed Kit supplements the popular model by offering a creative base
for assignments or science projects.
The patented kit includes two plaster cast molds, plaster, paint,
paint brushes, bridges, felt strips (for vegetation) and instructions
with activities. The 12-inch-square watershed mold can be reused.
EnviroScape® 's Make Your Own Watershed Kit sells for $29.95,
plus $5.50 shipping and handling (as part of the Kit's introduction, s&h
is free through Aug. 30). Volume discounts are available. Send your order
with payment to EnviroScape, c/o JT&A, 14524-F Lee Rd, Chantilly, VA
20151; Fax 703/631-6558. For more information, phone 703/631-8810 ext.10;

3) Reminder: Getting into a Food Mood Curriculum Now Available on the Web

The Getting into a Food Mood curriculum, sponsored by Purina Mills, Inc.,
is now available to be downloaded free of charge from the National 4-H
Council website at www.fourhcouncil.edu/ycc/food/main.htm. This
curriculum is designed to provide youth in grades 3-10 with a basic
understanding of issues related to the food industry and allows them to
explore the variety of careers in the food industry. The curriculum,
which has a retail value of $5.00, may also be ordered in hard copy free
of charge (except for shipping fees). See website for details.

4) Reminder: Free Agriculture Biotechnology Activity Brochure for 8-12
year olds

This free brochure is a great way to introduce science and biotechnology
to 8-12 year olds. Two activities - Name that Species and Bubblin Bread
- are fun and sometimes messy, but are based on discovery. Learn about
biotechnology together with this great educational tool. Activities are
adapted from a full curriculum developed for 5-18 year olds. The
brochure also provides current website resources to learn more about this
critical topic. Order single or multiple copies through email at
YCC-Team at fourhcouncil_edu. Ask for Fields of Genes - Making Sense of
Biotechnology in the World Around You, and list your name, address and
number of copies desired. You can order the curriculum at
http://www.4hbookstore.org under curriculum items. The curriculum is
also available online at http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/ycc/ffg/fsci.html.

Check out the Youth Grants webpage at
http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/programs/grantinfo.htm. These grants provide
opportunities for young people and adults to take action on issues
critical to their lives, their families, and their communities. Youth
take the lead in the design of the project, the proposal writing process,
and the implementation and evaluation of funded projects. We will
announce on this webpage when applications for grants are available.
