Even glass and plastic surfaces develop a layer of microorganisms over time.
One of the benefits of benign neglect - don't over clean the tanks. Another
excuse for laziness, perhaps. I have had "volunteer" fish develop and grow to
maturity in a completely empty (supposedly) 55 gallon plastic storage drum.
