Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 60, Large tanks, mixed species breeding
I have been doing more and more multi-species permanent breeding set up where the fish or shrimp have similar requirements and are compatible behaviorally and I find it is not only productive but a lot of fun.
I raise different shrimp with Corydoras hastatus, Corydoras habrosus,
Aspidoras pauciradiatus, Also different shrimp or fish in my permanent pleco breeding set ups. Cherry shrimp happen to be the shrimp that ended up with my Leopard frog pleco breeders, L134. I leave the fry in with the breeders for about 6 weeks and have to feed often and the shrimp population blooms in the abundaance of food and hel keep the tanks cleaner.
Because the Flash Pleco, Panaque sp L204 comes from hard alkaline water and tolerates salt I am growing both yellow and Chinese Zebra shrimp plus Betta sp Mahachai together in a 29H. The Panaque are infamous wood eaters and messy fish but their waste supplies the small shrimp and Betta fry with a good start until the Bettas can take brine shrimp. The Betta Mahachai is one which ignores its young except to have an extended guarding period and frequent spawns means they end up watching out for all the smallest fry.
To eat or not is an interesting question. Some fish are just evidently instinctively programmed not to eat fry as long as they receive enough food. When these combinations work they can be an enjoyable and easy way to raise fish. In pleco breeding tanks, the breeders spend so much time in caves one almost has to have something innocuous to add more interest to the tank.

a heavilyplanted 100. Regardless of what fish you put in there, what you may see is what the truemax. size the fish are capable of; especially small fish. I placed thirty P.nototaenia Kribi that I purchased through Atlantis into a 150, with a largecanister filter to keep good water flow, and they are now pushing threeinches in length. They show great color and vitality, excellent finextensions and lots of spawning activity. They seem to prefer spawning inthe gravel and the driftwood, spending more time near the bottom than I hadobserved previously. The only other inhabitants are a few P. modestus and afew pairs of Nannochromis sabindae who've staked out the driftwood piles. The Procatopus "sip" flies just like trout do when I am Fly fishing........:O)Bp------------------------------To join the AKA see http://www.aka.org/aka/modules/content/index.php?id=9Archives are at http://fins.actwin.com/killietalk/Modify your subscription at
