Re: [Killietalk] catching live foods
I catch larvae from my horses' water troughs, which have no connection to
local "wild" water. I get mosquito larvae, blood worms, and some "critters" I
call "commas on speed" for lack of a better term. Also, if you don't clean your
mower blade regularly, you can collect maggots from under your lawnmower (no
comments as to how I know this!) which are clean of aquatic contaminants,
and your larger killies will love them. You could put some containers in your
back yard to collect your own larvae, just remember it is important to float a
few leaves for the female mosquito to sit on to lay her eggs. Collect egg
rafts for fry, newly hatched mosquitos are even smaller than newly-hatched BBS.
Egg rafts look like black dry rice floating on top of the water. Carolyn
