I catch larvae from my horses' water troughs, which have no connection to  
local "wild" water. I get mosquito larvae, blood worms, and some "critters" I  
call "commas on speed" for lack of a better term. Also, if you don't clean your 
 mower blade regularly, you can collect maggots from under your lawnmower (no 
 comments as to how I know this!) which are clean of aquatic contaminants, 
and  your larger killies will love them. You could put some containers in your 
back  yard to collect your own larvae, just remember it is important to float a 
few  leaves for the female mosquito to sit on to lay her eggs. Collect egg 
rafts for  fry, newly hatched mosquitos are even smaller than newly-hatched BBS. 
Egg  rafts look like black dry rice floating on top of the water.      Carolyn
