There have been very few host clubs that want to move
to a different weekend. as Tom stated, I think there
were a few way back in the 60s and 70s. Always when
this subject comes up -- and it has before, the bottom
line is there are objections to any weekend you pick.
Some have even more objections because of holidays
like Easter, Christmas, whatever. School is not a
valid reason to avoid the Memorial Day weekend, nor is
it for any other holiday weekend, because a holiday
weekend is also a school holiday weekend. Every
attendee has to weigh the trade-offs no matter what
weekend is chosen by the host club. A couple of no-nos
- bad travel weather - winter. Too hot to carry fish -
summer. That leaves Spring or Fall. 45 years of
arranging conventions has ruled out all but Memorial
Day and Labor Day and Memorial Day has almost always
won that debate. Now there are always specific
problems - Memorial Day in Indianapolis would not
work, for example. Am I being old and traditional? -
YES. I believe the words of Satayana " Those who
ignore history are doomed to repeat it" Or something
like that.
