Re: [Killietalk] Summer convention issues
Loyalty is a valid comment, Karl - but it does work both ways. I use the
term tradition because with the exception of 2 conventions in the 1960s (I
believe) the AKA National Convention has been held Memorial Day weekend. I
believe the word tradition means something that is done the same way over
and over. But traditions can certainly change.
When UNYKA won the bid for 2008 at the 2006 convention - we had a hold on
the convention site for Memorial Day weekend based on that past. The hotels
in many areas today are booking two years in advance and to get a place to
hold the convention - we had to make the arrangements before we even placed
a bid. In fact had we tried for another time of year - we probably would
not have a location near an airport - or even perhaps in central NY where
our group is based. Memorial Day weekend is the quietest weekend of the
year for the hotel we chose - because it is located on a college campus
(Syracuse University) and students have just graduated and summer session
has not started yet. That may sound a bit extreme, but we only had two
choices which came close to being able to host the convention at reasonable
prices in the entire Sysracuse region. The hotel we used 10 years ago was
already fully booked.
I am sure in some areas it is not hard to find a hotel - and in others, much
harder.
I am really not sure what weekend would work any better - perhaps some club
should submit a bid for a different time of year and see what happens? I
would support any bid passed through the Convention Assistance Committee and
help as much as possible to secure it. I am not adverse to change by any
means - particularly if it enhances the AKA. I am 98% certain I will attend
whereever and whenever it is held. I have missed a few conventions now and
then since the 1970s, but since the mid 1990s, only one and that was more
health related than any other reason. The National is my primary focus and
NEW is my secondary. Anything else would be a wonderful bonus on a rare
ocassion.
