Re: [Killietalk] new peat ?
Mike,
you may find more credibility of this from a more experienced/authorative source but...
GAR; some locations/subspecies "seem" to do better OTOP vs. water (and visa versa)
Makurdi didn't do much for me in water; same for FP.amieti, FP.Cinn & SJO likewise...
while GAR Akure, N'Sukka & FP.oeseri appear to be the opposite (str8 water is best for me)...my akure esp. seem to develope too fast on peat (12-14days); it works, but puny fry ...althoughYMMV
..australe; don't seem to matter which way, whereas my chomeaphy's eggs turn into blackish "mush balls" OTOP (I find OTOP performance varies greatly within the aphyosemions)
as for peat; I've said this before (and w/o any hard data to back it up): seems some killie eggs appear to "like" oak leaf mixed in...as I recollect; the larger ones (like moema, et)...and actually some of em' I didn't have much luck with that powdery "Jiffy" type peat (at least not the brand I bought)....cudda swore it "pickled" some of em....
...picking eggs outta a petri dish: I mist it 1st, then hold the dish at a angle under bright light; even "dirty eggs" show up....I use one of those plastic seed labels for plucking em out(easy to find right now)...I find the ones labeled "Better bush tomato" work best :-)
...and I'm missing something here?; aside from "green" incentives, why even re-use peat? I thought like a bale was about 6 bucks (although I do boil & re-use that $50 per "troy ounce" fiberous "Fluval Peat" for FIL,congicum et)
KC ....outdoor no smoking ban aside, what about 2nd hand auto exhaust?

Subject: [Killietalk] new peat ?
Folks . . . those of you who pick and put eggs ON peat . . . pick from the
mops and put on the top of moist peat . . . how do you get the eggs back
into the water for hatching? Do you just submerge the peat in water and let
the whole mess hopefully hatch? Do you scrape the top layer of peat/eggs
into the water container or do you pick each egg off of the top of the water
and put them into the water. As of late I have been using the "top of peat
method" to incubate some Aphys. And Fundlop. And my fertility of these eggs
has gone up as opposed to picking and putting them in water for the entire
2-3 weeks! The transfer of the eggs back into the water is a bit of a pain .
. . is there a good/easy process?
Question two: Generally speaking what is the increased time involved in
'top of peat" vs water incubation? Australe gold for instance . . . Gardneri
for a second instance . . . what would you expect from water hatch and "top
if peat" hatch in number of days? Any explanation for the increase number
of days? . . . that may be more questions than I am allowed . . . !
Thanks
Mike
