Re: [Killietalk] Re-use of peat
I have 3 Petri dishes of peat I use for storage of Fp. avichang and a
couple others I use for other Fundulopanchax eggs. I have used the
same dishes for 3 years without changing the peat. I just submerge
the dish bottom in water and let the fry swim out and capture the
same material to place eggs on.
Reusing peat for bulk storage (in bags) may or may not be the same.
I have tried to autoclave peat to kill off the fungus and mold which
often arises from long term storage. I use it for Grindels and white
worms in addition to egg storage, and the resulting autoclaved peat
set aside in a plastic bag actually filled the bag with mold in a
weeks time after the heat treatment. I would say the heat treatment
cooked the stuff in the peat just to make it ripe for the mold to
consume and grow on.
