Good point, Larry.

Unfortunately, the KMI (official AKA nomenclature) and Huber's KilliData
don't reference the location codes we use in the hobby to minimize
accidental hybridization. Both are excellent sources of data, otherwise.

Personal communications from Dr. Lazara indicated that he was reluctant
to follow the splitting that most authorities have followed in recent
years. Many of us who have observed both are aware that /Fp. nigerianus/
and /Fp. gardneri /are two distinctly different species. Ken felt the
whole group had not been analyzed by any modern authority, so he left
the NIG as a sub-species of GAR, for now, in KMI.

To me, the distinction is pretty clear, but we need to have an agreed
standard, so that's the way it will be until a new KMI is issued or a
change is announced at the AKA web site (unlikely in the extreme). For
now, the Akampkas, Akures, etc. will be a sub-species (/nigerianus/)
under /gardneri.

/As a very rough clue, the GAR tend to have less yellow or orange
marginal borders to their unpaired fins (e.g., white or bluish in
Nsukka) than the NIG. [Many years of careless labeling have left us with
a lot of exceptions to that guideline, so please don't take it as any
kind of gospel.]
