Re: [Killietalk] Nothobranchius Guentheri Zanzibar Killifish eggs

I don't know what other folks have experienced, but I'm beginning to develop
a theory that eyed eggs aren't necessarily ready to hatch. I'd watch my
Austrolebias eggs like a hawk, checking them every week or two starting at 4
wks. When I saw the standard well developed eye, I'd float them. Often at 8
wks instead of the standard 3 months. Most did not hatch even though I could
see that little gold eye sitting, staring at me from the water (with a good
amount of peat in it, by the way). Those that did hatch tended to be
sliders. Dry, float, dry, float....4 months and they still just stare at
me. So here's what I'm thinking. Float them too early and two bad things
happen. 1. Their air bladder has not yet developed (develops last as lungs
do in mammals??) and you get a slider. 2. Floating too early somehow
changes the egg so that it is more difficult to hatch on subsequent floats.
OR....I'm just full of it and just can't do Aust. very well. Any other
folks have a similar experience?
