Re: [Killietalk] Nothobranchius Guentheri Zanzibar Killifish eggs
I am sending this direct as well as to killietalk. I have dealt with hatching
issues for many species, including some Nothobranchius, but mostly South
American annuals. The most valuable thing I learned was that eggs hatch when they
are ready, not by a timetable. The best tool for determining that is a way to
see the eggs. This is how I do it. I should state that I am almost 79 years
old and have Macular dystrophy, so my vision is somewhat impaired. Nevertheless
I can find eggs usually in peat by making a shallow (1/4 inch) slurry of the
peat in hatching water and place in a large clear Petri dish or other clear
shallow container. Then I position a flashlight underneath and a 2x magnifier on
top. The clear, undeveloped eggs show up very clearly. The fully developed
eggs are harder to find, but I still can find them with a little time. If they
are clear they are not ready to hatch. If they are dark and especially if you
can see eyes with a little more magnification then they are ready. I hatch in
2/3 rain water and 1/3 dechlorinated tap water.
