Re: [Killietalk] RO water, Hardness, Conductivity, TDS, and other related topics http://www.water-research.net/totaldissolvedsolids.htm

My understanding is that it is the egg fertilization that suffers not eggs
already fertilized. If the water is hard, the egg develops a shell
impenetrable by the sperm. Storing picked eggs in harder water is not a
problem if the fish spawned in soft water but not the reverse. For
particularly sensitive species, spawning may be also discouraged by hardness
of the water. For most middle of the road Aphyosemions, if you get a lot of
white eggs, the water is too hard or you have a bad male. If it happens
with a lot of different pairs, it is probably the hardness in the breeding
tank, not the male.
