Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 28, Issue 16--AKA information and Discussions -- a refocus

Over 15 years ago when I moved east for my present job I did so to be closer
also to my parents since at the time my father had been somewhat ill. My
late, ex-wife still upset at reversal of custody had sunk further into
alcoholism and prior to the move would call me at all hours of the night-a
call when the bars closed half way across the country would produce a middle
of night call I had to answer not knowing if a problem existed with my
father. Once settled in the new location I got an unpublished, unlisted
phone number with the reassurance that only people I gave the number to would
call. Other than phone companies and businesses/telemarketers obtaining my
number via my credit cards, incoming calls were family and killifish friends.
The only other place to obtain my phone number these last 15 years was
through the AKA's roster.

My first impression was that if the roster(s) were old enough one's phone
number changes often, pretty much every time you move. Hoping not to offend
most of you but I might assume that most who are active via KT are computer
savvy and that major subset means you are also fairly young. The ability to
get fish (and subsequent information) may be financially restricted and most
of you may still be a way off from home ownership. While home ownership may
also not be long term, for most it is and that stability usually means you
not only have the same address for a long time, you have the same phone
number as well. So while selling of old AKA rosters may not be the
proverbial telemarketers dream, they really are a potential invasion of
privacy.

You are obviously missing the point. First of all, the roster is not
published to PUBLIC domain. As Tom Grady has pointed out, the AKA is a
PRIVATE organization, and the roster is intended for the PRIVATE use of its
members. It is not intended to be in the public domain. That is why you need
to log into the website with a password to get to it. I personally don't
think any harm will come from it, but it may, and that is the point. I know
several people had previously expressed concern over the info's availability
on the website. It is just a sad state when one of our members has determined
that he should make a buck from from the other members' personal info.
Perhaps I won't renew this year afterall.
