It is exactly this type of mentality that is driving old stand bys
like Simp. constancea, Pach. playfairi, a myriad of gardneri and
striatum strains from the hobby to name just a few. One of my
favourite fish is N. foerschi and particularly the old aquariums
strain that used to be known as N. palmqvisti "Dar es Salaam". These
old location-code-less fish have been the mainstay of the hobby for
years. They are the best beginners fish and by no means should they be
disadvantaged in comparason to new imports simply because they do not
have a location code.
Location names and codes have been corrupted many times in the past
and continue to be corrupted. Some are corrupted beyond rescue by poor
handwriting passed down several keepers or plain accidental fish/label
mix-ups. We have had disasters in the past but we recover quite well.
There were several naming mix-ups at the BKA convention that were
resolved very quickly by the organizers. The only one to eascape
setting up the show was some N. rachovii MOZ 99-9s (no... no-one
listened to me when I said they were 99-9... "the bag says 99-1").
There label was corrected on the day of the auction by the person who
sent the fish in. The ink making up the 9 had rubbed off making it
look like a 1.
The disasters happen and the disasters are largely fixed because the
current system works well within the current framework we keep killies
in. How well is the current convention working? Go see
http://www.killifish.f9.co.uk/Killifish/Killifish%20Website/Green/Imports_Index.htm
to see how well it is even being applied to commercial imports.
