Some questions:
What are you feeding? "Good food" isn't very descriptive.
78°F is about 26°C which is quite warm. A lot warmer than 24°C (75°F).
What strain do you have? The wild caught Beira fish live at least 18
months. I have seen it! tanks of wild fish in 96L tanks. These fish
were fed mainly grated beef heart and blood worm. They were also not
fed at least two or three days every other week. They were kept at
temperatures of about 24°C and the tank was stuffed with java moss.

The black strains don't seem to make it past about 6 to 8 months...

Keeping the fish warm during the day and cooler at night also extends
lifespan [source: lots of anecdotal evidence and one very good paper:
        Podrabsky JE, Somero GN. (2004) Changes in gene expression associated
with acclimation to constant temperatures and fluctuating daily
temperatures in an annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus.
J Exp Biol. 207:2237--2254].
