Re: [Killietalk] Mouth Fungus?
They are in seperate tanks. Both pairs of fish are in respective 5.5's, but were together up until a week ago. I may try pennicillin or triple sulfa in a few days if it doesn't clear up.
Thanks for the reply,
Kris
It sounds like your males are "mouth-wrestling", perhaps as they sort out a
pecking order. Have they been together as a group long?
Frequent water changes - as Charles mentioned, as many hiding places as
possible, consistant feeding and keeping their temperature a little below
the middle/ to the lower part of their comfortable temperature range may
moderate their aggression. Time and space are not always available for the
"deluxe treatment."
I feel a little guilty offering solutions I might have trouble providing. On
the other hand, making suggestions is easy. ;)
If aggression really gets out of hand (which doesn't seem to be the case),
removing females seems to have a "quieting" effect on the males. Of course
then the killies in a spawning set-up have to get used to each other all
over again.
Jim Gasior gave a talk a while back in which he noted that he often kept his
breeders separated by gender. He suggested conditioning them well and
putting them together for purposes of procreation and then sequestering them
again in a day or two.
That also works for shows - putting together previously separated pairs. It
helps if one has worked as hard as Jim in caring for his killies.
A very ancient (25 ybp) remedy suggested to me for mouth fungus was
Aquatronics triple sulfa. (It may be sold by others.) It worked a couple of
times, once on the new male in a pair and once after a minor altercation in
a tank.
If you haven't used any of the penicillin group or other medication beyond
the salt and water changes yet, it might aid in the healing process.
I'm pretty sure you know this, but for any lurker who doesn't, don't mix
medicines. :)
All the best,
Scott
> I should have mentioned that I already changed water a couple times and
added salt. The fish look better, but they still have fuzzy white patches
on the mouth. Curiously enough, it seems as if only my males are effected.
The females who have shared tanks with the infected males since day 1 never
showed symptoms.
