RE: [Killietalk] Killie Cocaine/Brine Shrimp Plus
I did the wingless fruit flies a few years ago. Unfortunately the ones that
were going around back then were the larger variety that took 21 days or so
to develop. Some fish liked them better than others. If the temperature
dropped too low there were no flies. When it warmed up there were too many
flies. Sometimes the medium went moldy other times it turned to soup. I had
to plan feedings a month in advance. I lost interest after about 6 months. I
finally designed a trap for wild fruit flies that had overrun my home. The
trap had only one small flaw. It not only trapped fruit flies but it bred
them. The flies ate the bait and reproduced. I finally wound up with a trap
full of wild type flies. I released the flies into a plastic bag froze them
and fed them to the fish. Some fish loved the little flysicles.
I set up a daphnia pond this summer. I got plenty of daphnia blood worms and
skeeters some days and less others. It is actually still producing. It was
worth the $7.00 the kiddy pool cost me plus of course the alfalfa pellets
and daphnia net for a few more bucks. Daphnia and skeeters are ok but
honestly, I believe that they are pretty weak foods. I think that they are
excellent for promoting color and a good source of fiber, but lack
sufficient fat and protein for good egg production. The fish I fed
exclusively daphnia looked thin and grew slowly despite having great color.
When I added white worms to their diet the plumped up and started laying
lots of eggs.
During the switch back to primarily worms, I fed the Brine Shrimp plus, It
was actually an improvement over the daphnia. Daphnia make for a great
supplement, but I think that they are another one of those incomplete
nutritional sources.
Finally, I might add that you should be very careful about bringing anything
into your fish room from the wild. About two years ago I brought in some
blue green algae with a plant. It turned my living room display tank into
pea soup. I also found flat worms living in one of my fish tanks the other
day in one of the tanks I fed daphnia to over the summer. Flat worms are
carnivorous and can eat eggs. They are also usually too smart to get eaten
by the fish. I might note that some will eat your fish. Finally short of
bleaching out the fish tank there is no way to get rid of them.
With regard to skeeter larvae, I have already had West Nile Virus and
probably can't get it again according to the local health department. As a
matter of fact it killed an older gentleman just a few blocks from my house.
For me it was an unpleasant encephalitis complete with a high fever, massive
headache, paralysis and bazaar flashbacks months later. As I skim my pond
often I probably reduce the overall skeeter population with my pond although
of course some escape. This spring with all of the rain my yard was so
overrun with skeeters I could swat dozens at a time. Therefore I decided
that one more pond could not possibly make things worse. But remember, for
me mosquitoes are only a minor annoyance, they could kill you or someone you
care for.
Peace,
~RJ~

Hi RJ--
I'm using the new formulation. Just started feeding wingless fruit flies as
a live food supplement recently, and the fish continue to eat them along
with the flake. Will see how they respond to daphnia and mossies in the
spring when I can net live foods from the ponds again
