Re: [Killietalk] Re: Killies on the bubble

Sorry Lee. The lack of pictures is mostly because it is illegal to even *possess* any endangered or threatened species in the US without (an almost never issued) permit. The laws refer to possession and transportation, and have nothing whatsoever to do with "selling" the fish. To publish a home-aquarium shot would be tantamount to confessing a felony.

[None, BTW, are on the CITES list, which was put in place to discourage international commerce in endangered species. Like many laws, that one has had the opposite effect. Ivory and Rhino horn prices are being held up so high that poaching has become a mandatory way of surviving in some African countries.]

It is *not* illegal to possess them in most of Europe, which is a major reason that aquarium populations of our nicest natives can only be maintained (and legally photographed) there. [No one knows how they get there, but you see interesting names on some US show exhibitors, like "Peter Maas." :-)]

We get as many pictures as we can on our Desert Springs Action Committee trips, as the work is done under legal permit and we have a chance for a few snapshots. If you want pics of western Springfish, Pupfish, Dace, Chubs, etc. see the galleries at http://www.pupfish.net/dsac/.

There are no really decent pictures that I can find of *Cypr. radiosus* in the literature or on any hobby site. I think I may have dickered a deal to get some field shots, next spring when they are in best color, in a photo tank. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hello All,

Just for the record. I want all of you to go to the AKA killie gallery and count the number of native fish photographs. This will just about sum it all up. Oh, by the way I found Cyprinodon photos on Killie club websites from overseas. HUH?
Oh by the way just because it is illegal to sell some native killies that does not restrict you from just giving them away!!!!!!!! I hand out eggs and fish all the time, on occasion it has saved the strain I was keeping from disappearing after a freak accident (4 KIDS)
You could always trade, or send them to somone "dedicated" to preserving the species. IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY!!! It is however about doing the right thing. Give it some thought!!
