Re: Inducing breeding...again?
I'll go with David on this one.
Here are a couple of what *I* think are useful facts:
*Frozen* Artemia are nearly worthless unless flash-frozen by cryogenic
techniques. The bodies disintegrate when thawed and the nutrient juice is
spread through the tank and not eaten. Water fouling is severe, and the fish
starve, while eating the empty skeletons.
Artemia from the mountain lakes of the far west are totally worthless as
food, because killifish show absolutely zero growth when fed them. [That is
well documented by serious controlled studies.]
SF Bay salt-pond and GSL Artemia are fairly nutritious if fed live or when
properly frozen. [Unfortunately, not enough use the patented process,
developed by SF Bay Brand, to use CO2-chilled slabs to instant-freeze the
Artemia. Those that do, provide Artemia that stay whole when they thaw.]
Adult Artemia are much less rich in fatty acids and other high-energy food
value than some other foods like worms, but are an important part of any
good maintenance diet if you have no live mosquito larvae, glass worms,
Daphnia, o/e.
Some are even sold as frozen and gut-loaded, I understand. Since I have
access to excellent live Artemia, I have not tried those.
