Re: Dead shrimp blues
And a much better bet for that 20 gallon tank of brine shrimp would be
daphnia. BS and Daphnia eat pretty much the same stuff. Freshwater carries
more oxygen and often those cultures are more productive. There is no salt
creep to enchant one's non-killie keeping spouse. Daphnia can be seived and
sorted by size for different killies (ever tried pouring adult brine shrimp
through a seive?)
Wayne, if you would be interested, let us know what part of the country you
hail from and I'll bet if there are a couple killinuts within a short drive,
one of them could spare a few "spawning pairs" of Daphnia. If you are near a
local killie group or even general aquarist club, your chances are even
better.
If that doesn't work, the weather is still fine for shipping - um - Daphnia
anyway. If you have a box and postage and a little patience (crummy job
schedule starts before the post office opens and too often doesn't end until
after) - e-mail me off list and I'll try to beat the Christmas rush.
If you have a tank with a tendancy towards greenwater around, take out any
plants, remove the filter element in your filter (all you will want is water
movement) and continue to feed the fishy residents copiously. Set up another
tank for the daphnia (the floor - out of the way - is fine for North
American Daphnia) with siphonings from tanks being water changed or from
that greenwater tank. I light could be left on the Daphnia tank 24/7 -
providing the fishroom with a moon and you with a nightlight which can be a
mercy around fish tanks..
I have often used daily siphonings from a 20 gallon greenwater tank to feed
a 40 gallon daphnia tank.
Maybe you will be singing the Daphnia antheme. ;)
All the best,
Scott
