A pH of 7.8 is not particularly high.

Almost all killies will be happy and will breed at pH of 7.8. That is
generally less important than hardness and total dissolved solids (tds). 
Some rainforest killifish eggs do not hatch well in harder water, and tds 
is an indirect measure of osmotic pressure. [Sudden changes in tds 
probably cause the problems that used to be called "pH Shock."]
