RE: White worm culture
Jim,
On occasion, I have used a dilute solution of malathion or sevin. Sometimes
both, to knock out a brown mite or white fly infestation. I will not
harvest worms from the culture for the prescribed number of days to allow
the soil organisms to break down the chemicals. The reason I use these
chemicals is because they are the same ones allowed to be used on vegetable
crops provided X number of days [varies by pest and crop] is allowed to past
before harvesting for human consumption.
Before anyone jumps on their 'high horse' on this issue, you may want to
consider what chemicals [including pesticides] you consume as a human.
However, you are correct: "Two wrongs don't make a right". This way my
killies and I can share the same diseases.
"Lighten-up everybody!"
Thanks,
mike

I friend of mine who is a chemist at Upjohn/Pharmacia or whoever they are
this week claims he uses Raid to kill the mites. He doesn't feed for a
couple of days and then sprays them. Claims it doesn't hurt the worms or
fish.If anybody tries it let me know how it works as it sounds like a bad
idea to me. I have found since I got a refrigerator for my white worms I
don't seem to have as much trouble with mites.Don't know if it's the lower
temperatures or the fact that they are sort of isolated being inside the
frig.
