See if you can get some water sprite (alternatively Najas or hornwort)  for
the top of the tank. More expensively, get some peat fibers for the tank
bottom.

A cheaper alternative, gravel the back 2/3s of the tank, feeding brine
shrimp in the front. Include a couple of pond snails for K.P. detail. Plunk
in a couple of  those "Lock Rocks" you won "way back when" in a raffle. They
will provide shade and shelter. And they are better than filching Leggos
(sp?) from the kids. ;)
