Both vestigial and wingless are recessive alleles. Drosophila will arrive in
busses anywhere there is any yeast. So the answer to how is that some happy
wild type (normal wing genes) stopped by for a lunch of the yeast in your
wingless culture jar. After lunch he had a little sex with one of the
residents. All those flies will have normal wings and will breed with your
wingless strain. After a few generations all that is left is wild type.
Prevention: Good foam plugs.
