I'm still in transition, Kent, and feel my tap water suddenly changed
during a period when I had no tds meter to notice it. I don't have a
calibration of a lot of what happened.
Interestingly, I can detect no chlorine at all in the newer, softer water.
Usually they have to zing it up in summer to handle bacterial bloom.
I have no fear of bringing low tds water up to 100-120 ppm or so with
plain salt. No plant, fish or snail I'm familiar with is bothered at that
level, and the osmotic pressure relief (from 34 ppm) can be a real
blessing. Also, fish from harder water, obtained at the club auction, can
be introduced with minimal acclimation, where the 34 ppm stuff could be a
serious shock.
I see new shoots on some of my Java moss, so maybe I'm being too much of a
nervous nelly about all this. Maybe it just needs to adjust a bit.
BTW, it is 101F here at nearly 6:00 PM! [The AC keeps my tanks below 75F.]
