RE: KillieTalk Digest V4 #296

Scott,

Sphagnum doesn't just grow in the far north. The Okeefenokee swamp is loaded with peat and in Florida you can find it growing in nearly any damp acidic area. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but sphagnum only forms bogs in areas with little inflow or outflow of water but with constant moisture. In other areas, such as where I find it, it is growing among reeds and sedges or in open damp areas with not enough nutrients to support much but carniverous plants but where it doesn't form into deep layers. I would imagine that unless you live in a desert or dry area such as the high plains there should be some near you, but if not I can get some pretty easily.

Canadians, Russians or those from the far northern U.S please feel free to
correct me, but doesn't spaghnum grow in peat bogs. Several generations and
a couple 100 years later the stuff on the bottom has formed what we think of
as conventional peat moss?

Timing is everything. :)

All the best ....
