Doesn't the term Shark refer to a much higher taxon than tooth carp?  It's
up there with groups that include all ray finned fish (or close to it).  A
guppy and an killifish are many times more closely related than one shark to
its distant shark relative.  If I'm reading the tree of life correctly a
guppy is be closer to a seahorse than a shark to its furthest shark
relative.

If reproductive modes are plastic then so are the mammals because we give
are livebearers and platypus are egg layers.
