Re: does the heater bother fish?
Outside of messing with chemical additives, the easiest way to knock off a
whole tank of fish is probably via a heater mistake. I definetly recommend
using one with a thermostat - so you can "set" the heat, instead of just
guessing or only looking at your floating thermometer once a week. Of
course, you should always have a thermometer too so you can periodically
make sure the thermostat is working properly!
As for the light "bothering" the fish, I think most fish are more rugged
than that. In fact, the noise and vibration resulting from the simple act
of your walking by the tank after their bedtime is probably more disruptive
then the flickering pilot light of a heater. Most fish who make it all the
way into the typical community tank are pretty tough customers when it comes
to such stuff. I wouldn't worry about it.
As for buying the right heater, most will say on the package what the
wattage is and what size tank it is appropriate for. Naturally, too much
wattage gets too hot and too little isn't hot enough. Otherwise, it's
pretty simple.
