Re: My Experience with A. Biv Funge and A. Bit. Benin City
My biggest problems with BIT/BIV types are usually in the first few days. The fry are SOOOO small, as I'm sure you've seen. I got by with it a few months ago when I had a nice batch of San Francisco baby brine, which the fry were able to barely stuff down.
Honestly, the best way I've found for raising BIT and BIV types are to use lots of plants in 10 gallon aquariums, especially java moss, water sprite, and duckweed. Add a few snails. Let the parents frolic for a couple weeks and pull them. Add a small shot of baby brine into the tank every day and soon you will see lots of babies darting around. This might not yield the results that intensive, infusoria-fed methods would get you, but trust me, soon you'll have more than you bargained for. I'm currently sitting on a couple dozen fry/juveniles and am trying to get up another couple dozen before spring (I've got a nice 30 gallon growout tank waiting).
As for the couple weeks thing, are you changing the water? Try to ensure that the water you change with is the same temperature, as I've found BIT types tend to shock somewhat easily with drastic temperature changes. Others seem to handle it with no problem.
Hope this helps.
