I've found that vascular plants will generally out compete algae as long as
my florescent tubes are replaced regularly.

         I always prefer to find a natural way of getting rid of algae, be
it 
a fish that likes to eat it, or algae eating shrimp, or through less light, 
less food and more water changes. If a product sounds to good to be true it 
usually is.
