RE: Fish room plans and other disasters
Hi Jay,
I keep much of my killie setup in my unheated basement where it can get real
cold. Air temperature does not matter much as all of my tanks have heaters.
I keep heaters and thermometers in all of my tanks even those which are in
heated areas of the house.
Before you attribute your problems to the temperature in your basement or
the outside wall issue you should invest in a very useful piece of test
equipment. An aquarium thermometer will tell you if your water is too cold
for killies. ;^) It may be the best two bucks you ever spent.
I am currently paying about $6.19 for Second Nature 50 watt heaters and
about $1.99 for Hagen floating thermometers with little green suction cups.
For $8.18 per tank you get piece of mind and you can worry about more
important things like water changes, picking eggs, etc.
When the furnace breaks down, which only ever happens on cold days, those
little heaters really earn their keep.
Peace,
~RJ~

Happy New Year all. With any luck 2002 will be better than 2001; we can
all
hope and pray. But I digress.
I've been working on creating this wonderful fishroom in our basement and
recently picked up a few pair of killies at the local club meeting to
restart
my collection. It really has been fun: I'm adding a sink, with hot and cold
running water, and a drain - not too bad for a rental house. And I'm
looking
at an optimal arrangement for racks, in the mean time my poor fish aren't
doing to well (okay, everything died). I've come to believe that it isn't
the food, (mostly bbs with a touch of other live and flake) or even the
water
changes (roughly weekly) in heavily planted tanks.
Just a thought but does anyone think it could be the weather. This morning
it was something like 9 degrees outside and I'm against an uninsulated wall.
Geez, stupid, stupid, stupid I'm saying to myself. Well, no more new fish
for a while, at least until I can get some good insulation installed. Now
to
get the landlord to pay for it all. Hehehe. Its a blistering 25 right now
(midday).
