Microworm culture
Hi,
The microworms we know were first introduced in this country in the
early 1950's by the great aquarist Gene Wolfsheimer. Gene got them from Mrs.
Grindal in Sweden. She was the first to isolate the little worm we use.
Later, she isolated and introduced the grindal worms we also raise. (An
American variety was isolated by the Houston Aquarium Society and sold as
"dwarf" white worms in the 50's but this species is no longer cultivated in
the hobby.) William Innes gave Mrs. Grindal his first Aquarist of the Year
Award for this work. She was part of Gene Wolfsheimer's Aquarists
International club. They all sent letters to every member each month. Gene
started it. Jorgen Scheel was a member and his "KilliLetters" grew out of
Gene's Aquarists Intern'l. In many ways Scheel laid the ground work for the
AKA with his letters and distribution of fish and eggs around the globe in
the late 50's -- a process first pioneered by Wolfsheimer in the early 50's
with Rivulus eggs sent to England and Australia. So the little microworm we
all feed our killies is a part of the foundation of the AKA. Nice to know in
this 50th Anniversary year.
