Crushing defeat with sponge filters

Last night I crushed my last Aphyosemion Auerum female under a sponge filter. This is the second time in a last two years I lost fish this way and not have decided never again.

Thought I was carefull. I am looking for something to put/glue on plastic flat bottom that will give the space. Thought of glass marbles or those semi round glass "stones"? 

What have you found to put under the filter to avoid this from happing? 

If someone has some Aphyosemion Auerum females or pairs I would like to get in contact with you. I can be contacted off the list @     mzavod at maxinet_com
