I've heard of worm bedding from online culture stores but haven't the
foggiest idea what it's made of.... so what is it... sawdust mix??
Where did you buy it from, the cost and what are you feeding the grubs?
I have talked at length with servile worm ranchers and they tend to agree
peat moss is the best bedding for worms after it has been neutralized ( ph
brought up to 7) The Magic Worm Bedding has a ph of 7 that is why it works
so well on all types of worms that we feed our fish. Microworms can even be
raised in it once the moisture content for them is mastered.
I realize you are in a place where you cannot get MAGIC WORM BEDDING so here
is what I use when money is short or it is the dead of winter and the local
Wal-Mart's do not have it. I take a five gallon bucket of peat and put it
into a large tray (The kind masons use to mix cement in.) to the peat I add
a cup of chemical grade lime and mix it until it is all the same color. (
the lime is a base and if you have delicate hands wear gloves for it will
burn you.) I then take about half of the mix out and mix water to the other
half. this water lime and peat is allowed to sit over night. the culture is
set up in a sweater box in the following manner. The dry peat lime mix is
added around the outside of the box. The moist new peat is added to the
middle and the starter of worms is added to the middle on top of the moist
new peat. The middle of the box is covered with a piece of glass after a
small amount of food has been added. The culture is always moistened in the
middle after the food is added. The humidity in my fish room is so great
that water logged bread slices will be more than enough water.
I use the cover of a shoe box in the sweater box to cover the glass.(
there is an area of about an inch or more all around the box that is not
covered.) The smaller cover will allow enough air to get to the worms.
The above system works for both white and grindle worms.
I feed the grindals baby cereal, oatmeal.
