George, I use either dry potato flakes (mix with water and you get mash
potatoes) or oatmeal for my microworm cultures. Microworm uses a
slightly 'runny' (read more water) while the experiment with the grindal
is the same oatmeal mix but using less water, liken to freshly turned
soil... only damper.
I didn't add yeast to the oatmeal mix and I'm beginning to see mold
forming after a week... may not be a good idea after all. Hearsay has
it that blended grape seeds with water has anti-bacterial, anti-fungus
properties. Care to try that?
My personal observation with grindals so far;
Peat with soil ... I get mites, ants and "whatchamacallit"s.
Peat only ... no mites, so far so good (IDK if 'decayed sphagnum
moss' is peat).
Oatmeal ... mold culture?
Synthetic foam ... no experience (waiting for RJ's help to do it right).
Culture is fed with cheap fish-food flakes and occasionally, potato
flakes. Have yet to try cat chow... I don't own cats!

Karl, at one time we didn't even have microworms! until I traded
Echinodorus Ozelot 'Red's (aquatic plant) for a starter culture with
someone from US. I've since sub-cultured many such cultures and freely
distributed them to fellow fish hobbyists. Grindal and vinegar eels
(also previously unavailable here) have just started to take off with a
few fellas including myself, forming a "worm-network" to encourage the
feeding of cultured live foods to our fishes & their broods. This
network also serve as a safety net in case of cultures crashing.
I've heard of worm bedding from online culture stores but haven't the
foggiest idea what it's made of.... so what is it... sawdust mix??
Where did you buy it from, the cost and what are you feeding the grubs?
Regards,
Ronnie Lee
