RE: Amquel in shipping bags

Hi Ken,

I admit that Amquel seems to help the fish survive transit. I would love to
know what your conductivity tests reveal. I do not have a conductivity
meter so I can not run the test. I am not sure what the effects of Amquel on
my chemical reagents (pH and Hardness) would be, so I do not know if my
tests would be worth while.

Best regards,

~RJ~

Hi RJ,

I have used Amquel for several years without ever having any problems
from its use (when used for shipping or other purposes). I can vary
the amount used over a large range with no ill effects on the fish.
It sounds like the conductivity of your water was just dramatically
lower than the water in which the fish were shipped. I have received
fish shipped in water with a conductivity greater than 1600 us (ie.
off scale on my meter) that I was planning on placing in water with a
conductivity of less than 300 us. If I had not measured the
conductivity, it is very likely I would have experienced the same
problems you did. Instead, I was able to add salt to my new water
so that I could gradually lower the conductivity for the fish over a
period of days as I did scheduled water changes. My guess is that
you would have had the same problem with these fish even if the
shipping water did not contain Amquel. I will try and remember to
check the conductivity before and after adding Amquel to see if it
changes significantly.

I really like your idea of labeling the bag with the water
conditions. I try and remember to e-mail the receiver with the
conditions before I ship the fish but labelling the bag would provide
a nice backup.
