Peat as Substrate

Someone at a petstore was telling me recently that for
my community tank (not setup yet) that he would
recommend 2" of Flourite (which I have), a layer of
peat, and then a layer of regular gravel on top.  Is
there any advantages to doing this?   My first thought
was just to put 2" of flourite followed by another
inch or so of regular gravel.
