In the UK we have a product called Polyfilter. This alleges to remove all
those little aquarium nasties(metal's,Nitrate's and phosphate's).
I have used this myself and it is an excellent product BUT that was not in a
planted tank it was in a Mbuna tank.
I am not sure what beneficial elements (for want of a better word) would be
removed. mind you a lot of Marine Aquarist's do use these (but they also
tend to use UV).I am sure this is also available in the US.
