FAQ on lighting is underdetermined

[New to this list, if not to growing plants under water.  Hello,
everybody.]

The FAQ section on lighting gives a formula for computing reasonable
light levels for a planted tank: multiply the surface area by the
distance from the light source, multiply that by a fudge factor, and you
get watt-hours per day. But it doesn't seem to tell what *units* you
express the inputs in. Doing some orders of magnitude in my head, I think
it that inches might work, but is this right?

(BTW the section on suppliers still lists Dupla as if it were available
through U.S. sources.)
