I like PennPlax Ultra Tri-Lux bulbs and have measured their color temp at
6500K. They produce good color rendition so if the "6500K" rating on your
bulb is accurate, they should be pretty good.

The GE Daylight Ultra and Philips Ultralume are the off the shelf bulbs
that I use on my 75G tank, and I get GREAT plant growth. 3 40W bulbs on a
75G tank. I mix the 2 for the heck of it...

Thanks for the info. I have another question - does cool daylight have the
necessary colour out put to grow plants well? I am trying to avoid buying
any of the expensive tubes. I currently use 4x36 6500k tubes and the
growth rate is good, but I want to know if there are better "standard" tubes.

At the moment my tank is only 18" deep, but I have ordered a 4x2x2 and
wonder if the light will punch the depth. I intend to put 6x36 watt tubes
over the tank in two reflectors. Only trouble is that they will be very
close together. I heard that tubes closer then 1 1/2" will suffer from
over heating. Is this true? Has anyone tried this?

Here in Singapore the weather is hot year round and my tank is usually at
30-31 C in the day and this drops to 28 C at night. The lights are now 6"
above the tank mounted to a shop reflector. I use clips and just plug in
the connectors to the tubes. This doesn't look too good, but it's the only
way I can keep the tank below 32 C!

So far all the inhabitants of the tank and the plants are doing well. Of
course I can't grow riccia which I really like, or java moss, but the
glosso and mini swords do a decent job in the front of the tank.
