growing Lotus from seed.....

hello all!

i have a question for you guys.  is there a trick to growing lotus from seed? 
 i know i should nick the seed so water can penetrate the seed coat...and 
have done that...but in the last 3 months only one seed has sprouted any 
leaves.  is there a secret i dont know about?  is it temperature dependent?  
anyone got any suggestions?  any help would be greatly appreciated.
