Cool White bulbs work well
There is an interesting article in the latest TAG by Pete Mohan which
has ratings of PAR for several fluorescent lights. Interestingly, Cool
Whites (390) are rated slightly higher than Chroma 50 (360) which are
rated higher than Gro-Lux (340). PAR is a better measure than lumens but
still doesn't weight the red and blue photosynthetic peaks high hence
the low ratings for the grow plants which are very good for growth.
Cool whites rated 4th overall of 17 bulbs evaluated! The tops went to
Advantage X and Actinic White. Actinic light is not particularly good
for growing plants (just coral). For viewing aquatic plants, Cool Whites
are fine.
