I have built my own stand for my 55 gallon tank and it is far superior to
store bought brands.
I built the frame from 2x4's and used screws to connect everthing.
I covered it with furniture grade plywood (my wife choose oak i think) and
used trim.

I stained it, then covered the stain with a clear polyeurethane sealer.  It
has worked great for nearly 2 y ears and one move.

I also have an MS excel spreadsheet around here that you plug in tank
dimensions to and it calculates the size of the stand how long you need to
cut boards.
