Roxanne, here is what I believe should be your #7 thing to try:

Diatom filter.  I consider it to be the best piece of emergency aquarium
equipment I own.  Nothing gets through.  I have a Whisper Diatomagic, but if
you tank is largeish (75 gallons or more), you might want to check out a
filter with a greater throughput.
